Medical ImagingThe staff at our modern medical imaging facility offer a service that is comprehensive, personalised and high quality. The onsite medical specialists and imaging staff provide 24-hour imaging services to the hospital.

Our medical imaging services include:

  • magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • computed tomography (CT) scan
  • ultrasound
  • general radiography
  • interventional and diagnostic procedures.

The proceeds generated from the imaging facility go towards the purchase of new state-of-the-art equipment to support our community’s medical imaging needs.

We are committed to making sure you are receiving the best of care. Please do not hesitate to call us if you think we can improve any aspects of our service.

Appointments

Appointments are easy to make, with urgent scans available on the same day that you visit. If you do not need an urgent scan, one of our friendly reception staff can organise an appointment at a time that suits you.

You can also make appointments for medical imaging at the regional hospitals in Beechworth, Bright, Corowa and Myrtleford. Our reception staff can let you know when appointments are available at these hospitals.

Referring doctors

Northeast Health Wangaratta strives to have open and constructive relationships with our referring doctors so that their patients are receiving the most efficient and appropriate service for their situation.

We encourage new referring doctors to contact us if they need any information on the available services.

Cost

Medicare covers most of our medical imaging services. We bulk bill for all eligible services. You will be charged a fee for some services (e.g. MRI) that are not covered by Medicare.

Pre-approved WorkCover and TAC claims are also welcome.

If you have any questions about fees, or need more information please bring it up with our reception staff when you are making your appointment.

Our fees for MRI are comparable to those charged by other facilities and reflect the large financial investment Northeast Health Wangaratta has made in purchasing this machine.

Do I need an appointment

You do not need to make an appointment for a general X-ray, although we encourage you to make one to minimise your waiting time before your X-ray.

We try, whenever possible, to book you in on the day that you make the appointment.

You usually need to make an appointment for an MRI, a CT scan, an ultrasound, a mammogram and for screening biopsies/injections.

Do I need any special preparation for my procedure?

When you make your appointment, our staff will let you know how to prepare for your procedure. Information is available if you are still unsure or forget what you have to do before your appointment. Feel free to call our staff if you need more details on your procedure.

What should I bring and wear on the day of my scan?

You should bring:

  • a valid Medicare card and the request/referral from your doctor – you cannot be scanned without a request/referral
  • your X-rays and scans from the last 2 years – our radiologists may need to keep them but we will let you know when you may collect them.

You should wear loose and comfortable clothes but:

  • avoid clothes with zippers, belts or buttons made of metal
  • remove objects such as keys and wallets before going into the scanning area.

How soon will I receive my results?

Your results are usually sent to your referring doctor within 48 hours. If you need your results sooner than this, we can arrange for them to be processed within an hour.

Your doctor has the option to look at your images online (on I-MED) or we can provide a disc with your images or give you the films.

If you are admitted to hospital, emergency department and staff on the wards can access all scans performed at Northeast Health Wangaratta. This means faster treatment and better care for you because you will not have to be re-scanned for diagnosis.

How is the money raised from medical imaging used?

If you use our medical imaging services, you are supporting your local hospital.

Northeast Health Wangaratta uses the money raised from medical imaging procedures to invest in new equipment and to provide 24/7 emergency radiology services for the hospital.
